I think we where pretty much successful on the Gerle Creek camp out.

But I would love to see more camp foods hot dogs and cereal are not what I’m looking for, it would be awesome if we could be able to do every thing over an open fire.  Also I was amazed at how a group did not come up with a breakfast… we need more communication or something.  Well that’s all!

Notes From Last Week August 5, 2008

Last week the Minutemen Patrol had their patrol meeting at the park. I just wanted to forward to you all the notes Joseph and I took, since most of the conversation dealt with our Scouting 101 campouts. So the meeting was kind of a ‘Camp Out De-Brief’.

The scouts talked about the need for a Duty Roster at camp outs for things like clean up and dish washing. The Chief Cook of the patrol will assign duties in the camp kitchen.

The scouts noticed that big rocks that are tempting to climb can be a distraction big distraction when work needs to be done.

They want all scouts participating in the camp out to sit down and eat together.

They (the scouts) want more opportunities for all to cook. A solution is to have 2 Chief Cooks and a cooking/kitchen team under each Chief Cook.

They realized, when assigning who will bring griddles, pots, pans, etc., that the Quartermaster must assign proper accessories. This can be the right rubber spatula for the non-stick griddle, extra cans of propane for the stove, etc..

They want more communication between the Grub Master and Chief Cook before and during the camp out.

They want the Quartermaster to assign someone to bring a folding table.

Scouts should bring their own chairs.

Scouts should practice flashlight etiquette.

They want a printed agenda for the week-end’s activities. The Patrol Leader will develop this, and write it on a white board. A Duty-Roster will also be printed and pinned to the Patrol Leader’s tent.

They want a Patrol Box (a trunk from an Army Surplus?) to store patrol items like a dutch oven, 1st aid kit, big clock, dry erase markers, etc..

They want to have patrol roll call each morning. On Sunday mornings this could lead into the Scout’s Own Service that we should have each camp out.

They want to invite an adult to be their guest at each meal.

Scouts should not be left alone with fire until they have their ‘Firem’n Chit’.

Whenever there is a fire in the fire-ring, there should be a bucket of water near the ring.

Set up the camp-kitchen area right when they arrive at the camp site.

Duty Roster Assignments:
pot/pan/mixing bowl washers
food fetchers (get food out of bear lockers)
water boiler
drink preparer
water fetchers
dutch oven crew
stove crew
fire tender
garbage man
grease trapper
