Scouting 101 Schedule May to August

Here is the tentative schedule for the summer. These dates are set in stone already but their may be some changes to the exact nature of each outing.

June 10, 17 – Basic Camping/Cooking skills at the Troop meetings. We will discuss basics of cooking, menu planning, camp sanitation and cleanup, and site selection.

June 20 – 22 – Carr Lake Campout (I-80/Emigrant Gap area, about a 1.5 hour drive from Roseville) – This will be a skills weekend. We will work on cooking, fire-building, woods tools (knife and axe), knots, hiking safety, lashing and rope making. The highlight of the weekend will be a 5 mile cross-country map and compass hike through a lake dotted Sierra basin. Cost will be between $15 and $20. – Already done and we enjoyed it. I believe we only walked 4 miles though.

July 8, 15, 22 – Tenderfoot to First Class First Aid training at Troop meetings, specifically for the younger Scouts. Stay tuned for an exact schedule of events, but we will be preparing for our disaster weekend camp out.J

July 25 – 27 – First Aid/Disaster Weekend – This will be at Donner Memorial State Park (I-80 to Donner Pass Area). We will of course be working on cooking, fire-building, knots, lashing, rope making, and woods tools as time allows. However, the primary focus of this weekend will be First Aid. We will have several First Aid scenarios, covering Tenderfoot to First Class Skills. Cost for the campsite is $7.50 per person. You should plan on a total cost of about $20.00 per person with food and gas. Limited to 32 participants.

August 15 -17 – Campout to Union Valley Reservoir (Highway 50/Ice House Reservoir area, about 20 miles West of Lake Tahoe). We will continue to practice skills such as cooking, fire-building, knots, lashing, Hiking, etc. We will try to cover skills from Tenderfoot to First Class that we have not covered yet. Stay tuned for more about this trip. Cost is $7.50 for the campsite. You should plan on the total being about $20.00 per person with food and gas. Limited to 31 participants.

There will be a camp out in September and October, but I haven’t gotten that far in planning yet. If anyone is interested in helping plan these activities or has any ideas for the program, please let me know. We need help to get our new scouts trained.

The camping trip to Carr Lake was discussed today and duties were assigned to different patrolmen for the next camping trip.

We need to make sure we have enough equipment to cook our food this time. This was overlooked on our last camping trip. I can bring a stove, some wooden spoons, a mixing bowl, a liquid measuring pitcher, a spoon to pour the batter, a spatula and an ice chest.

We need more time to discuss the menu so that I can assign who brings what grub. John said that the time was too short when he was the Grub master.

Welcome back Matthew, we missed you.
